Question If you have an electronic box (metal encased) with static sensitive components installed inside, no conductive dust cap and operator is not strapped up and grounded, is it safe to handle as long as you don't touch the pins on the connector? Won't the two different potentials try to equalize? - Anonymous, Seattle, WA
Answer If the case is fully enclosed, then the answer is yes, the parts are protected. If there is an open connector (conductive leads leading to the sensitive devices within) then the components within are susceptible to ESD damage. If a shunt bar (or equivalent) is used to cover the connector(s) then you are protected. If an operator handles the connector, he/she need to be grounded (protected) as well as the metal case (on a grounded mat).
