Question If a person is wearing a Statshield smock, is it alright if they wore a cotton based flame resistant apron to protect their smock from soldering splash?
Answer It should be no ESD control problem if the cotton flame resistant apron is low charging. Cotton typically is low charging. It would be the ESD sensitive items being protected from charging on the person’s high charging clothing. Wearing the Statshield Smock over the clothing suppresses the charge. Per ANSI/ESD STM2.1 a groundable static control garment system suppresses the electrical field from clothing worn underneath. Putting an insulative cotton flame resistant apron over the Statshield smock isn’t the best, but if indeed low charging, it should be OK.
