Question Where can I get the ANSI/ESD test methods?
Answer Standard Test Methods should be purchased from the ESD Association at www.ESDA.org. However, Standard Test Methods detail procedures for an independent test lab to follow. For testing in a factory the document to get with simplified test procedures is Compliance Verification ESD TR53. It is available as a complimentary download. Go to www.ESDA.org, then click “Standards” and then “Documents”, and scroll down to download ESD TR53 which you can then save to your computer as a .pdf. Also ANSI/ESD S20.20, Packaging ANS/ESD S541, and the Glossary ADV1.0 are available at no charge. For most users, the only documents to reference in your ESD control plan would be ANSI/ESD S20.20, ANSI/ESD S541, ESD ADV1.0, and Compliance Verification ESD TR53. See ANSI/ESD S20.20 tables; that is where the required limits are listed for EPA ESD control items. See that there are columns for Product Qualification and Compliance Verification and that the test method for compliance verification is ESD TR53. These are simplified test methods (like using a wrist strap tester) and likely what you do in your factory. For most companies, there is no need for you to have or to read Product Qualification standards. For example, ANSI/ESD S4.1 is for Worksurfaces. There is no “required limits” in it. It is primarily a detailed test procedure for independent test labs to test worksurfaces. So if you had a Meteorology Department, they should have a copy and follow its instructions. How many samples, what size, how to precondition; what controlled temperature, and what controlled relative humidity. It shows where to place the electrodes. Five different test locations on a single mat so for most users it is not appropriate for testing of installed worksurfaces in the factory.
